Management Team
Premiership Strategies International (PSI) is led by a team of respected professionals with extensive industry experience and research expertise:
John Tripodi is President of PSI, specialising in the areas of marketing and business strategy, brand management, marketing communications and innovation management . John began his professional career in sales with Cadbury Schweppes, before joining Mars Incorporated / MasterFoods Australia & New Zealand in 1999 where he oversaw the marketing of leading brands in the Mars product portfolio. In 2003, John was a recipient of Mars Incorporated's preeminent Global Employee Award, out of the company's 40,000 worldwide workforce. In 2005, John joined L'Oreal Australia in a general management position. John completed a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne and then undertook the Marketing Honours program at Monash University where he graduated with First-Class Honours. His thesis on sponsorship marketing and dissertation on brand management both won prestigious awards at the 1999 Australian Marketing Institute (AMI) Awards for Marketing Excellence. He is also a past recipient of the AMI‘s ‘Junior Marketer of the Year' award and has also received an honorary Diploma of Market Research by the Market Research Society of Australia in recognition of his research. John maintains his research interests as a Visiting Lecturer and industry advisor at the Bond University Business School on Australia 's Gold Coast and has published in international journals including the Journal of Brand Management , International Journal of Sports Marketing & Sponsorship and the International Journal of Market Research .Email: jtripodi@premiership.com.au
Robert Macdonald is the Melbourne-based Managing Director of Premiership Strategies International. He specialises in the areas of industrial relations, human resource management , organisational structures and governance and business strategy . Robert is a Senior Fellow in the Graduate Sports Law program at the University of Melbourne Law School, where he teaches corporate and sport governance. This follows a research position in the Economics Department at Melbourne . He has also lectured in the fields of industrial relations and human resource management, sport management and business strategy at Griffith University , Victoria University and La Trobe University. Robert has a Bachelor of Commerce (First Class Honours) and Bachelor of Laws from the University of Melbourne and is in the final stages of a Doctorate of Philosophy, also at Melbourne . His thesis ‘ League Structures, Labour Markets and Competitive Balance: A Study of Australian Sporting Leagues ' examines economic and legal aspects of the structure of the Australian Football League, the National Basketball League and the National Rugby League. Part of this research has been published as a book chapter in International Sports Economics Comparisons (2004, Praegar Publishers), as journal articles in the Oxford Review of Economic Policy and the Sport Management Review , and commentary in the Australian Financial Review and Sport Business International magazine. Robert serves on the editorial board of the academic journal Sport Management Review and is a member of the Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand and the Australia and New Zealand Sport Law Association. Levent Shevki is the General Counsel for Premiership Strategies International and specialises in the areas of marketing and sponsorship law, personality and image rights, licensing and merchandising, broadcasting and media law and event and player management . Levent is a Partner of legal firm, Cornwall Stodart, where he has a strong commercial and transactional practice with a strong focus on clients and transactions in the corporate sports industry. Levent is part of the legal team that has provided strategic legal advice and services to such organisations as the Australian Olympic Committee, Holden Limited, Suncorp Metway Limited, Spotlight Stores Pty Ltd, Sportal and the Victorian Cricket Association. Levent also provides player management services to a number of professional athletes and is an accredited AFL player agent. Prior to his legal career, Levent completed a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws (with Honours) at the University of Melbourne , where he majored in marketing and commercial law, with a strong focus on intellectual property and trade practices. He is currently undertaking a Masters in Commercial Law at the University of Melbourne . Rick Burton is Vice President (Marketing and Commercial) of PSI and specialises in the areas of sports marketing and sponsorship, strategic planning, celebrity endorsement and marketing communications. Rick is currently on leave from PSI as he serves as the Commissioner of the (Australian) National Basketball League, where he has successfully negotiated important relationships with Fox Sports and multinational Philips, which is now the naming rights sponsor of the NBL Philips Championship. Prior to joining the NBL, Rick was the Executive Director of the James H. Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon. Throughout his career, Rick has been constantly in demand to consult in the sport business and corporate sectors and to speak at conferences and seminars. Rick started his career in Syracuse, New York as a sportswriter for the Syracuse Post-Standard and the Associated Press before going into sports public relations, sports marketing and product management for the Miller Brewing Company, where he presided over an award-winning advertising campaign for Miller Lite and a media and production budget in excess of US $100 million. Prior to joining the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center in 1995, Burton served as Vice President of Performance Properties, the sports and entertainment marketing division of Clarion Marketing. Rick has consulted to global leaders in both the sport business and corporate sectors, with his client list including the International Olympic Committee, National Football League, National Hockey League, Japanese Soccer League, Australian National Basketball League, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Disney, Universal Studios, Nike, Reebok, Visa USA, Gillette, Sprint, IMG and GMR Marketing. Rick has published research and commentary in The New York Times, Advertising Age, Brand Week, BusinessWeek Online, Sport Marketing Quarterly, The (Portland) Oregonian and Marketing Management . In 2001, he began hosting a weekly television show (The Business of Sport ) for the Action Sports Cable Network and his views are frequently sought by the world's news media (Sports Illustrated, New York Times, Newsweek, Time, L.A. Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Business Week, U.S. News & World Report, The Economist, ABC News, MSNBC and ESPN ). Professor Laurence Chalip is Vice President (Policy and Strategy) for PSI, specialising in the areas of public policy, strategy and sports marketing. Laurence is a professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at the University of Texas at Austin, where he also serves as coordinator of the graduate and undergraduate sport management programs. Prior to joining the faculty at Texas, he was on the faculty of the School of Marketing and Management at Griffith University in Australia. His research focuses on issues of sport marketing and policy. He has published three books, three research monographs, and over 50 articles and book chapters. His research has been funded by grants from the Gerald R. Ford Foundation, Hankook Ilbo, the Australian Research Council, and the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism. Laurence is a Research Fellow of the North American Society for Sport Management, and has won two service awards from the Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand. He was the founding Editor of Sport Management Review, and is currently the Editor of Journal of Sport Management. In addition, he serves on the editorial board of five other journals in the sport management field.
